William Sturkey is an associate professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania, where he specializes in the history of race in the American South. His writings have appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post and The Atlantic, and he is the author of, most recently, The Ballad of Roy Benavidez: The Life and Times of America’s Most Famous Hispanic War Hero.
